“Being Andalusian by birth, María has been able to chatch the
essence of Flamenco, a musical culture with its origin in the
early 19th century, and combine it with the musical language of
today. The result is a very imaginative piece of music:
for virtuous saxophonists!”
is a piece for soprano solo based on the rhythms and folklore from Andalusia (Spain). Although it is not a flamenco piece, there is a certain spirit that reminds uf of the Andalusian art. An example of this kind of music that is reflected on the score may be the use made of the tempo of “Buleria” or the “taconeo” as an effect of a percussion instrument.
This piece is inspired by GUADIANA, which is a river in the Iberian Peninsula. It is considered the fourth longest river in the Peninsula and runs through Spain and Portugal.
The name GUADIANA has its etymological origin in Arabic (Wadi Ana or valley of Ana´s river), adapting the Flumen Anas from the Roman Hispania.
Originally, the pre-Roman inhabitants would have called it “Ana” river (probably “river of the ducks”), while in the Arabian countries it is currently known as Nahr Yana.
has been composed for and dedicated with true appreciation to ARNO BORNKAMP for his years of dedication to the instrument.
The creation of for soprano saxophone is due to two reasons. Firstly, it is due to the respect and admiration that bind me to whom the work is dedicated, Arno Bornkamp, who is a great saxophonist of recognized prestige and renown within the international scene. And, on the other hand, it is due to the need to broaden the Andalusian repertoire of this instrument.
The work, which is considerably skillful, is conceived as a series of thematic motifs where each of them has idiosyncrasy and in which the influence of Andalusian culture, and specially, of flamenco, is clearly reflected.
